Remember Thomson? It is the location of the prison slated to become the stateside home of enemy combatant detainees currently housed at the military-run facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. You might recall that quite a few Illinoisans bristled at the thought of suspected terrorists and enemies of the State becoming our newest residents. Even more bristled at the idea of selling the facility for roughly $170 million despite the facts that the mostly unoccupied facility has already racked up in excess of $164 million in state expenses and another $12 million in village expenses (and counting). Jailing Gitmo Terrorists

Once you move beyond my general objection to closing down Gitmo, I can’t say that I really have a problem with a hundred terrorists- er, I mean, “terror suspects”… or is it “suspected enemy combatants… or “supposed disagreeable opponents”- being moved to a supermax prison facility in Thomson, Illinois. The facility is presently just a $140+ million waste of taxpayer money (1,600 cells and 200 inmates), and the prospect of adding 3,000 jobs to an area experiencing 10% unemployment sounds good to me. Governor Quinn says this move could add up to $1 billion to the Illinois economy. Read more
